His and Hers Wedding Rings: The practise of wearing metal rings or bands on the fourth digit finger of either the right or the left hand, symbolic that the wearer of the ring is married, is believed to have emanated from Europe and is now widely practised in many cultures all the world.

As people get joined in matrimony, it is customary to exchange gifts including wedding bands or rings. Depending on local culture, this follows the exchange of other gifts including the engagement ring.

The groom historically wore gold rings while brides wore silver rings. In mordern times, however, brides as well wear gold rings and in most cases ensure that the wedding ring metal matches that of the engagement ring, as a mixture of metals will be seen as a mismatch.

The type of rings exchanged are often indicative of the stages of the relationship. Pre-engagement rings are exchaged when a serious relationship commences, while the eternity ring reflects a lasting matrimony and is usually given after the birth of the first child. The triology ring is symbolic of the past, present and the future, indicating a comittment to very lasting relationship.

The platinum is probably the most precious of wedding rings and is quite durable. It is a beautiful piece in presentation and does not require any plating. It is, however, more expensive to alter it should there be a change to finger size in the future.

The palladium looks similar to the platinum and costs much less. A much cheaper option is the titanium, which may be inlaid with other precious metals like gold or platinum, or simply remain in plain patterns. However, the titanium cannot be adjusted in the future to fit changing finger size.

Probably the most popular of wedding rings is the yellow gold. These are quite durable and, unlike the titanium, are capable of being altered to fit increased or decreased finger size. They come in different carats and it is not advisable to mix the different carats as they will look distinctively different with time.

The white gold is also increasing in popularity in modern times and are usually rhodium plated in order to amplify the whiteness. This protection typically lasts around two years after which it may need to be re-done. Similar to the yellow gold, the white gold could also be easily re-adjusted to fit changes to finger size.
